ISLAND UGLJAN
|
|
Ugljan is the closest island of the Zadar archipelago, opposite the town of
Zadar.
The island has a surface of 52 km2 (shore line is 74 kilometer long) and is divided from
Zadar by only 2,5 miles wide channel.
A bridge at the crossing Ždrelac connects Ugljan with the island of Pašman.
Ugljan has very good ferry-line connections to
Zadar (ca.30 minutes).

It is also called the green island, covered with dense bush, pine trees, olive-groves, fig-groves, vineyards and other Mediterranean vegetation.
Ugljan is one of the most populated islands on the eastern Adriatic.
Generations are involved with sea, seamanship and fishery, and 2000 years of tradition in olive growing left thousands of olive trees that produce oil of extraordinary quality and aroma.
In the whole northeastern side of the island there are many fisherman and tourist villages in natural coves, and the most famous are:
Kukljica, Kali, Preko and Ugljan. The other side of the island is generally uninhabited, with several lonely swimming bays which make it a true challenge for divers and sport fishermen.

Attractive sandy beaches shaded by pinewood, SABUŠA, JELENICA and KOSTANJ, can be found on both sides of the islands.
Jelenica is well-known nudist beach.
The island is very suitable for long walks and cycling tours.
Because of its close location, Zadar is a attractive
destination for the inhabitants of Ugljan. Regular ferryboat lines connect
Zadar to Preko, while the neighbouring island Pašman is connected with a bus line.
Islands Ugljan and Pašman are very similar.
Pašman can also be reached by a ferryboat from the town of Biograd.
Stony and sandy beaches, crystal clear sea, different possibilities for accomodation, unique culinary experiences are some of the reasons for visiting this island.
